We did spend a week at the actual Calico Ghost Town campground but I had an extra 3 days before I needed to be in Bakersfield and I wanted to do laundry so we checked in here. This campground is also on Ghost Town Road but it’s off a frontage road by the freeway and about 4 miles from Calico Ghost Town. Still convenient if you have a vehicle for visiting the nearby sites. There are several restaurants on both sides of the freeway but I didn’t try any of them while we were there. One boasts that it’s the “famous” Peggy Sue Diner.
This stop, about 7 miles from Barstow, is convenient for those heading to Las Vegas or Needles. The large sites are pull thru and separated by large oleander bushes and cedar trees so there is a sense of privacy. They also have cabins and “safari” tents for rent at this property. Amenities include a large laundry room, a store, and archery by the hour.
Be aware that you might need a long sewer hose depending on which site you get. On one row, all the sewer openings were at the very back and on the next row, all the sewer openings were at the very front. In the spot I had, I was forced to attached 2 sewer hoses in order to reach. I could not get the KOA wifi to connect but I think the service is only right by the office and I was closer to the dog park. My Verizon Mifi worked fine though while I was there.
I like this KOA, staff was friendly and everything worked. But we had one day where it was grey and rained all day so not my type of ideal weather. The greyness is reflected in the photos. But I don’t think this is typical weather for this area. There is a large off-leash dog park that my dogs couldn’t wait to get to every morning, pulling at their leashes until we got there. Even though there aren’t any toys or things to pee on in the dog park, my two still enjoyed playing there. My poodle even found a stray tennis ball while we were there so, of course, I was obligated to play fetch for awhile.
If you want to visit nearby sites or are passing through and need to stop for the night, I would recommend this KOA.
