Cary State Forest, Bryceville, FL

This would be a perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy some quality time walking the dogs — if you go when it’s not hunting season. Unfortunately, I was just passing through on a quick trip to get home for the holidays. I checked in at 5:15 pm and left at 8:15 a.m. And it was November so they definitely warn to wear orange if you choose to hike during hunting season. I wanted to avoid the Jacksonville area when traveling through and found this wonderful spot just off the 301.

There are only 7 reservable campsites but this small state forest gets a lot of day use and has many areas and trails I didn’t have time to explore. The sites are far apart so you won’t even know you have neighbors. I was concerned about driving my motor home so I booked the closest one to the main road that was available. Turns out that the roads are all easily accessible and it’s not as isolated as I thought it would be. There’s a campground host across the road. I had #2 which turned out to be the only one with backward hookups. I did a fabulous job of backing and parking all by myself, then had to pull out and turn around for the electricity. The sites are so big and there’s no traffic at all so it was no problem turning around.

My dogs enjoyed the smells and the two walks we took and I know they would have loved to stay longer. The weather was perfect too. I went from 40s in South Carolina to 70s here and even had to get my little fan out. Maybe one day we will return for a longer stay.

The six sites
A Florida sunrise
Early morning
“Backwards” hookups
A Florida forest
Lots of things to smell

Two roads to explore
Site #5
