This KOA Journey is just a few miles from our newest National park, White Sands. Their website states they are also a base camp for exploring New Mexico Museum of Space History and Three Rivers Petroglyph Site, among other attractions. The only other sightseeing I did was Pistachio Land, a gift and souvenir shop and farm that gives tours, just 7 miles up the highway.
This KOA has a high desert ambiance but has a backdrop of the mountains of the Lincoln National Forest, making for picturesque sunsets and sun rises. It features all the expected amenities, including a nice laundry room, shower rooms, swimming pool, a small store, and a K9 park.
I only stayed for a quick overnight but it appears there is an area for long term stays in this large rv park. I was in the pull thru 30 amp spots with fun 1960s era styled wind breaks, picnic tables and bbqs. The person who checked me in said the tent area actually stays quite full when I commented on it. While I was there I spotted a motorcade of 6 three wheelers all pulling little motorcycle pop up trailers.
Be prepared for hot weather and little shade as the trees all appear to be rather stunted. The sites are well spaced, at least in the area I was in, and the small concrete dividers give a little sense of privacy.
Only about 17 miles to White Sands National Park Visitors Center, which doesn’t allow RV camping, makes this park the ideal stopping off point for your explorations.
