I love the gulf and when friends said they were coming here for two days and wanted to know if I wanted to join them, I jumped at the chance. This is a small state park, mostly pull-thru sites, with water and electricity. Don’t be discouraged as you pass all the oil refineries on the drive here as this park is surrounded by wildlife refuges and very serene.
In addition to fifteen paved sites with water and electricity, there are numerous primitive tent sites on the beach and several day use sites with picnic areas. There is one boardwalk at the intersection of day use parking and the first camping sites and there are several hiking trails through the marshes.
If you love birding, this is definitely the place for you. My friend even spotted an alligator in the pond area next to her site one morning (watch out if you have little dogs). Some of the birds spotted in two days were avocets, common nighthawk, plovers, killdeer, laughing gulls, grackle, egrets, herons, spoonbills, brown pelicans, and gallinule. There were some small brown rodents with short tails running in an out of the marsh grass, getting our little dogs very excited.
The sites are fairly widely spaced apart but as there are no trees, you will see your neighbors, no matter which site you take. Each site has a post for hanging trash bags and there are two convenient dumpsters, one at each end. Parking is allowed on the beach at the east end of the park but there are no cars allowed on the beach area that fronts the campground. Across the road, in another part of the park, there are more hiking trails and fishing ponds but as I didn’t bring my car, I didn’t explore this area.
Within a few miles of easy driving along Texas State Highway 87 are Texas Point National Wildlife Refuge and Texas ornithological Society Sabine Woods. Don’t forget to bring your camera and your binoculars.
