Chattahoochee Bend State Park, Newnan, GA

We originally had reservations for 4 nights but the day we were scheduled to leave was the day Hurricane Florence was predicted to make landfall and we would have been traveling further east so I cancelled those reservations and added 7 days here. So we were here for 11 days.

Best thing about Chattahoochee Bend State Park is the hiking trails! Oodles and oodles of them. So many that I actually got kind of lost a few times but even though it adds an extra 30 or 60 minutes to your hike, you always find a signpost eventually and can make your way back. In the vicinity of the campground, there is a river trail and a wild turkey trail. Other trails include mountain bike trail and equestrian trail. Sites along the trails I walked included observation tower and beaver ponds.

The highlights are some of the trails we walked during our stay

There are no sewer hookups at the campsites but I drove over to dump twice and it’s just around the corner from the sites. A very easy process. There is a campground host on site. There is also a visitor center but this is a number of miles from the campground. We tried walking the trail to the visitor center but it was too far for us (about 5 miles each way).

Site #103, which we had for 4 days. Required leveling on one side.
Site #123, which we had for 7 days. No leveling required.

Positives

  • Beautiful small forest just one hour from Atlanta but worlds away
  • Clean and new looking; smooth pads although some of them slant for drainage
  • Laundry and showers
  • Lots of hiking opportunities
  • Near the river

Negatives

  • No sewers at the sites
  • Very isolated; you will need a vehicle to go anywhere; nearest grocery is 12 miles
  • They expect you to check in at the visitor center, even if you had a late arrival
  • Seed ticks — check yourself and your dogs after every walk
  • The day I left, there were sewer issues and my neighbors said the showers were backing up

Here’s another blog I wrote about this place with additional information
